Measure stockpile & earthwork volumes
When you need a real number for how much material is in a pile — or how much dirt moved between two visits — use the Volume Calculator. Unlike the quick estimate on the area tool, this reads your project's actual elevation model and computes volume by sampling thousands of elevation points across the area.
The Volume Calculator lives on your project's Details page, in the Terrain Analysis panel. It computes cut/fill once your project has an elevation (surface-model / DSM) layer; until then the panel shows an empty state. If your project doesn't have elevation data yet, reach out and we can add it.
Read a single volume
- On your project's Details page, open the Terrain Analysis panel (the Volume Calculator).
- It loads your elevation data automatically and shows results against a starting Reference Plane.
- Pick the base level to measure from:
- Lowest — measures everything above the lowest point (good for a pile sitting on flat ground). - Average — uses the average height as the baseline (the default). - Highest — measures fill needed to reach the high point. - Custom — type your own base elevation.
- Read your three numbers:
- Cut (red) — material above the baseline (what you'd remove). - Fill (blue) — material below the baseline (what you'd add to level it). - Net — cut minus fill.
- The details section adds area, elevation range, total earth moved, and average cut/fill depth.
Switch between cubic yards / feet (Imperial) and cubic meters (Metric) with the units button in the panel header.
Compare two scans over time
If your project has two or more scans on different dates, you can measure exactly how much material changed:
- Click Compare in the panel header.
- Choose the Newer Scan (A) and the Older Scan (B).
- Click Calculate Volumetric Change.
- You'll get the cut, fill, and net change between the two dates, plus a cut/fill heatmap — red where the ground rose, blue where it dropped. Use the opacity slider to blend it, or the eye icon to hide it.
- With three or more scans, a Volume Change Over Time chart shows the running total.
Save a report
Click CSV in the panel header to download a spreadsheet of your cut/fill/net figures and any comparison rows.
Good to know
- Volumes are computed from the Digital Surface Model using grid-cell integration across thousands of elevation samples — solid for planning, tracking progress, and budgeting.
- For a stamped, certified earthwork quantity, ask us for a full engineering report.
- This data is not a legal survey. Embry Solutions LLC does not perform land surveys. For boundary or title work, consult a licensed Texas surveyor.
